Lewes farmers market founder Harris honored

Tree dedicated in George H.P. Smith Park, home of market
June 18, 2024

A tree dedicated to Historic Lewes Farmers Market founder Helaine Harris is now growing in George H.P. smith Park.

That’s appropriate because the park is the location of the market, which has been growing since 2006.

Lewes Mayor Andrew Williams, city park commissioners and donors gathered June 9 to dedicate Harris’ tree and a plaque in her honor.

Lewes Councilwoman Amy Marasco said donations allowed several trees – oak, redbud and beech – to be planted.

“All of this in honor of the significant service and leadership that Helaine has provided to the Lewes community and the farmers of our region and state,” Marasco said. “She was integral to founding the Historic Lewes Farmers Market and continues today to nurture its continued success and outreach.”
