Hundreds of people attended the West Rehoboth Legacy Committee’s community-wide Juneteenth celebration June 19 in West Rehoboth. The event featured local food trucks, entertainers and vendors who are Black, brown and African American.

As the event took place on Central Street, the crowd milled back and forth between the West Rehoboth Legacy Mural and West Side Creative Market. Attendees would have been drawn to the mural regardless, but it received extra attention because of a hit-and-run vehicular accident June 13 that knocked over a significant section of the mural.

The hole in the wall has been refilled with cinder blocks, and a banner of the mural hangs in front of the wall. From the empty field across the street, looking straight on, the banner nearly makes the mural whole again. The cinder blocks from the original wall were laid out as a border along the garden’s edge as a reminder of the accident.

The West Rehoboth Legacy Committee is part of West Side New Beginnings Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to educating the general public about, and celebrating, the history of the Rehoboth Beach area’s Black, brown and African American people. For more information, email westrehobothlegacy@gmail.com.
