New work in Heidi Lowe’s landscape collections will be on display in her show Jewelry with a View, continuing through Saturday, Aug. 17, at Heidi Lowe Gallery on 119 Front St., Lewes
A reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, July 13.
A local artist continually inspired by nature and landscapes, Lowe uses metal with textures to create drawings of nature. She also implements various stones reminiscent of landscapes in her work.
The Silver Landscape Series is Lowe’s way of investigating her surroundings and her love of drawing. She uses silver sheet metal as her canvas and the tools as her pencils. The mark-making is made with an engraver, stamps, hammers and roller printing into layers of silver. It’s quick, gestural and evokes a drawing. These drawings comprise local settings of marsh, canals, creeks, horizon lines, ocean, beaches, sunsets and moonrises.
The landscape series is fully inspired by the stones Lowe uses and her awe of nature. She marvels not only at the beauty of the stones but also at how they are formed and how that affects resulting unique patterns, lines, striations, colors and forms.
“I love how, in nature, the geology of what is below the surface visually mimics what is above the surface. Stones are made in the earth but often look like nature above it, like clouds, tree branches, landscapes or a bird’s-eye view of the earth. Most of the pieces in this series have an image on the back directly informed by the stone telling me what the image will be. It is a special part just for the wearer and is made by hand sawing a cut-out in the back side of the silver setting,” said Lowe. “My intention is to imbue the jewelry I make with my love and awe for nature and its beauty, and hope it is felt by the wearer and they bring their own positive associations to the pieces they wear.”
