The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware hosted its 14th annual Days of Summer Camp Sussex County June 24-28 at its office in Milton.
The camp was for individuals with Down syndrome ages 3-13 and their siblings ages 3-10. The campers enjoyed opportunities to splash in the water, play in the sun, play games, dance and build crafts, and have just fun like any other kid at camp.
Campers also experienced the tame animals from The Little Farm, a yoga class, activities from Magic Tom and more.
Young adults ages 15-25 served as counselors. Volunteers were paired with each camper to ensure the camp was a safe, fun and memory-making experience for all who attended.
“Days of Summer Camp Sussex County turned out great with the help of so many amazing volunteers,” said Camp Coordinator Jess Walls. “With roughly 20 campers, the kids had a fun week full of activities. The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware offers camp in all three counties of Delaware. Families are so grateful that their kids have the opportunity to participate in an enjoyable and safe summer camp. Knowing that I’m a part of such a great organization that gives families and individuals a sense of community and inclusivity is so rewarding. The smiles on these kids’ faces are worth a thousand words. I’m truly looking forward to the next few camps this summer.”
According to the Down Syndrome Association of Delaware, the goal of the camp is to allow children with Down syndrome the opportunity to have the experiences of summer camp while practicing independence, developing physical and emotional health, and increasing their confidence levels. The Down Syndrome Association of Delaware strives to maintain an atmosphere where children can build great peer relationships and have a fun experience at camp.
