Passport Program highlights Lewes

Lewes Education Coalition works to get locals and visitors to explore what First Town has to offer
July 13, 2024

Looking for a fun way to explore Lewes with family and friends? Check out the Lewes Education Summer Passport Program that got underway at the start of July.

In the Lewes Education Coalition program, as visitors and locals visit various sites in Lewes, they can participate by scanning a QR code to answer questions about the site.

Locations include Lightship Overfalls, Fort Miles Historic Area in Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes Historical Society, Seaside Nature Center in Cape Henlopen State Park, Zwaanendael Museum, Lewes Public Library, the Lewes Junction Railroad & Bridge Association’s restored caboose in Stango Park and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry.

After visiting the sites and answering questions, participants will be entered into a weekly drawing for a basket filled with prizes for people of all ages. To participate, a minimum of six of the eight sites must be visited. Weekly winners will be notified by email. Prizes will be mailed.

David Christopher, chair of the coalition, said this year’s passport is a pilot program. “We want this to get bigger and bigger,” he said.

Christopher is a marine education specialist with the Delaware Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service at the University of Delaware.

“We want to raise awareness about the great resources provided by many education organizations,” he added.

The coalition was formed 14 years ago when educators realized that school field trips to Lewes sites were declining due to budget cuts and lack of time.

“We were looking how to get local school students and students from outside of the area to see what Lewes has to offer,” Christopher said.

He’s been chair since 2019.

The coalition offered teachers’ workshops to make local educators more aware of Lewes history and locations.

Prizes have been donated by Dairy Queen, Lewes Public Library, Cape May-Lewes Ferry, Quest Kayaks and Delaware State Parks.
