Lewes 8-10 baseball all-stars win thriller over Laurel 18-17

Showdown with Lower Sussex set for July 5 in Laurel
July 4, 2024

Literal and figurative fireworks showered the grass and dirt of Laurel Little League July 3, as Lewes and Laurel locked horns and teeth in an epic elimination game.

Jumping out to a 7-2 lead in the first inning, the Lewes 8-10 baseball all-stars continued to tack on runs to make it 15-5 with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. One more out and the game would have been over, but Laurel staged a nine-run, two-out rally to get within one at 15-14. Tied 16-16 in the bottom of the fifth, Brody Fazio came up big for his teammates and drove in two runs to provide the security needed for an 18-17 victory.

The seven-run first featured several walks, aggressive base running and a bases-clearing three-run single off the bat of catcher Austin Huff. Finn Kane, Cooper Skocypec, Fazio, Joey Petito, Andrei Tobias, Grant Hudson and Graham Knowlton all crossed the plate for Lewes. Kane, Skocypec and Petito visited home in the second inning to pad the lead to 10-2.

With the game tied in the fifth inning, Finn Louden and Finn Kane both reached base. Skocypec got a good piece of a ball, but it landed in leather before reaching the outfield. The next batter, Fazio, jumped on the first pitch he saw, sending a line drive to center field. Louden and Kane both scored, giving Lewes an 18-16 lead.

Fighting to the end, Laurel added another run to come within one in the top of the sixth inning, but Knowlton picked up a backward K to seal the deal for Lewes, 18-17.

Lewes will return to Laurel Friday, July 5, to take on Lower Sussex at 8 p.m. in another elimination game.
