Tower Beach FC wraps up second summer camp at Cape

Players ranging in experience learn new skills, refine learned ones
July 20, 2024

Looking to keep their touch and skills sharpened, local soccer players – and some from as far away as Ohio – battled the heat to participate in Tower Beach FC’s second summer camp of 2024 on the Bermuda fields at Cape Henlopen High School.

“We went two years ago because we were looking for soccer camps just to keep playing soccer over the summer so we didn't lose our technical ability,” said Christina Haynes about why she and her brother Tyler participated the week of July 8.

Haynes noted the variations in skill level at the camp but said she was very impressed with the high-end talent.

“Sometimes, when you go out you think, ‘Oh, I feel like I'm going to be the best player out here,’ then you come to the realization that there are really good players out there,” Haynes said.

Making the transition from defense to defensive midfielder, Haynes said her favorite part of camp was the power/finesse drill because it simulated the pressure of a real game and got her adrenaline pumping.

Coming all the way from Ohio to visit family and friends, Evan Truelson said he was happy to learn new skills and refine acquired ones while on vacation.

“First touch, how to strike the ball, give-and-goes, and all those details,” Truelson said before discussing his new favorite skill. “Striking with the top of your foot instead of the side.”

Truelson’s favorite part of the camp was the king of the hill drill, which taught shielding and ball control.

Tower Beach FC will host its final summer camp Monday to Friday, July 22 to 26, on the Bermuda fields at Cape. More information is available at towerbeachfc.com.
