Rehoboth author pens children’s picture book

Aimee Isaac’s “The Planet We Call Home” encourages environmental stewardship

Rehoboth author and former teacher Aimee Isaac has penned a children’s picture book that encourages environmental stewardship at a young age.

Published in 2023 through Philomel, a division of Penguin Young Readers, Isaac’s “The Place We Call Home” teaches children about the interconnectedness of the earth with the people who live on it, she said.

Formerly a first grade teacher and reading specialist, Isaac said she is now at work on her second children’s book, which she also describes as informational fiction based on environmental themes.

As a teacher, Isaac said her class housed plant terrariums with carnivorous plants. Students enjoyed catching crickets to feed their homeroom plants, she said, noting children have a natural preference for being outside and learning from nature.

At a book signing and reading held at Abbott’s Mill Nature Center July 11, Isaac discussed the writing and publication process as well as ways children can prevent pollution and protect the planet through conservation efforts.

“The more you know, the more you care about the Earth,” she said.
