Author to discuss origins of American Jewish identity Aug. 12
The Lewes Public Library, Seaside Jewish Community and Speak Out Against Hate will present a live, virtual presentation by Dr. Rachel Gordan, assistant professor of religion and Jewish studies at the University of Florida, about her book “Postwar Stories: How Books Made Judaism American” at 5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 12, via Zoom. Participants are welcome to view the presentation at home on their own devices or gather with others to watch the livestream in the library’s large meeting room at 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.
“Postwar Stories” shows how books and movies changed American perceptions and helped shape post-Holocaust American Jewish identity. By reflecting on publications such as Hobson’s “Gentleman’s Agreement” and Wouk’s “This Is My God,” Gordan shows the important role that popular culture takes in changing minds. Her insight into how Judaism became one of America’s big three religions gives important historical context for discussing anti-semitism and bigotry in the United States.
“Gordan has produced a readable, albeit scholarly, work on a subject that deserves more exploration,” said Enid Zafran, SJC Book Group Leader. “She is a dynamic speaker who will generate many thinking and talking points for us as a community to consider as we counter all forms of prejudice.”
