Area Democratic groups support Gruenebaum for county council
The Eastern Sussex Democratic Club recently announced its endorsement of Jane Gruenebaum for the Sussex County Council District 3 seat.
A Rehoboth Beach resident, Gruenebaum co-founded Sussex Preservation Coalition, a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that acts as a positive voice for sustainable development in the county.
To enter the election, Gruenebaum resigned as SPC president. Prior to retirement, she taught political science at Columbia University and served in leadership positions in Washington, D.C., including executive director of the National League of Women Voters.

14th RD Dems recommend backing
The 14th Representative District Democratic Committee has recommended the endorsement of Jane Gruenebaum for the Sussex County Council District 3 seat. Gruenebaum, who’s running against Republican Mark Schaeffer, received unanimous support at the committee’s Aug. 14 meeting, an action that will provide her campaign with funding, publicity and grassroots volunteers.
“We cannot continue to prioritize growth over quality of life,” said Gruenebaum. “Whether you have lived here all your life or only a few years, you know that our quality of life is dependent on clean air and water, abundant open space, protected forests and wetlands, and a minimum of light and noise pollution.”
Committee Chair Jeff Balk said he hoped the move would spotlight Gruenebaum’s strengths. “Given her extensive background in public policy and environmental protection, Jane is well qualified to serve on a council that’s allowed development to run amok,” said Balk. “We need someone with Jane’s experience to provide a balanced approach to growth.”
District 3 includes the Sussex County coastal communities of Rehobooth Beach, Lewes, Dewey Beach, Long Neck, Primehook Beach and Slaughter Beach. For more about the committee, go to 14thRDDelDems.com.
