Patrick F. McCarthy Sr., veteran, faithful parishioner

Patrick F. McCarthy Sr., 84, of Harbeson, formerly of Pelham, N.Y., passed away Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, at Beebe Healthcare in Lewes.

Patrick was born in Manhattan, N.Y., Sept. 21, 1939, son of the late John McCarthy and Margaret (Doherty) McCarthy. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. Patrick retired in 1996 from the Pelham Union Free School District with over 30 years of service.  

Patrick was a faithful parishioner at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church in Millsboro.  He was a model builder enthusiast of ships and planes, enjoyed traveling, and was proud of his Irish heritage.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the love of his life, Eileen M. McCarthy, in 2010. He is survived by his six children, Anne Marie Pavone and her husband Anthony of New Rochelle, N.Y., Patrick F. McCarthy Jr. of Mechanicsburg, Pa., Carol Buchanan and her husband Phil of Fair Haven, N.J., John J. McCarthy of Pelham, N.Y., Gerald C. McCarthy and his wife Lisa of Mahopac, N.Y., and Joseph P. McCarthy and his wife Janine of Eastchester, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where a prayer service will begin at 6:30 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 28, at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, 30839 Mt. Joy Road, Millsboro, where the eulogy will begin promptly at 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Patrick’s name to Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, c/o St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 202 Edward St., Georgetown, DE 19947.
