Author to discuss life of naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace Sept. 10

September 1, 2024

The Lewes Public Library’s Science and Society lecture series will convene online via Zoom at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 10, with a presentation from biologist Dr. James T. Costa about the fascinating life of Alfred Russel Wallace, one of the most famed naturalists of the Victorian age.

Costa will share insights from his book, “Radical by Nature: The Revolutionary Life of Alfred Russel Wallace,” about the self-taught scientist, daring explorer and humanitarian advocate who co-discovered natural selection and founded the discipline of evolutionary biogeography. “Radical by Nature” paints a mesmerizing portrait of a multifaceted thinker driven by a singular passion for science, a commitment to social justice and a lifelong sense of wonder.

A professor of biology and executive director of the Highlands Biological Station at Western Carolina University, Costa is an evolutionary biologist, entomologist, and Darwin and Wallace scholar who has lectured widely in the United States and Europe.

To register for the online event, go to tinyurl.com/LPLScienceFall24 or call the library at 302-645-2733.

Participants are encouraged to support the presenter by purchasing a copy of the book from local independent bookstore Browseabout Books.

Upcoming Science and Society lectures include: Oct. 1, “Infrared Treasures We Found with the James Webb Space Telescope”; Nov. 13, “Into the Great Wide Ocean”; and Dec 3, “Uncovering Dinosaur Behavior.”

The Lewes Public Library’s Science and Society - Making Sense of the World Around Us lecture series is co-organized and moderated by Colin Norman, former news editor at Science; Fred Dylla, executive director emeritus of the American Institute of Physics and author of “Scientific Journeys”; and Lynda Dylla, former public information officer at the Jefferson Laboratory and the U.S. Department of Energy.
