Matarese, Northbeach launch cornhole tourney in Dewey

September 10, 2024

Morgan Matarese went through something Nov. 28, 2023, she shouldn’t have had to; she lost her younger brother, David, to an overdose.

“He was the sweetest soul you could have ever met,” Morgan said. “Most people didn’t even know he was an addict. He was functioning, went to work every day. He was a great brother, son, uncle. His boss til the end said he was his best employee. He battled for four years. And unfortunately, he just couldn’t fight it; the addiction won.”

Morgan, a bartender at Northbeach, along with manager and bartender Peter Briccotto, had an idea to raise money for Attack Addiction, the foundation that provided David with housing and other essentials.

With just two weeks to plan and implement it, the inaugural Cornhole Tournament for David Matarese took place Aug. 31, at Northbeach in Dewey Beach. The event raised $2,665 for Attack Addiction between individual donations and registration fees from 16 teams. Mike Rosen and Bill Maher came out on top, taking the grand prize of $500 in gift cards. Second place received $250 in gift cards, while third place earned $100 in gift cards.
