American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard held a candlelight ceremony in its outdoor pavilion to honor the heroes who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The service opened with the commencement parade of the American Legion Riders.
Introductions were followed by a prayer and singing of the national anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance. A wreath was placed by the Colorettes followed by a flag-folding ceremony by American Legion Post 28 honor guard members Richard “Dick” Mansfield and Ken Mellon as Rosemary Kollar read “The meaning of the 13 folds of the flag.”
A POW/MIA ceremony was presented by American Legion Post 28 past commanders Jim Lafferty and Lee Glasco.
A short candlelight ceremony took place while Judy Mangini sang “God Bless America.”
A 21-gun salute was given by the American Legion Post 28 honor guard after which Taps was played. The ceremony closed with attendees waving their flags while singing “God Bless the USA.”
