Local leaders learn about Duffle Bags and More during work party

October 6, 2024

Duffle Bags and More welcomed two distinguished guests to its recent work party.

DBM is a local nonprofit agency founded in 2018 that now includes 200 volunteers, donors and friends. They work to provide sturdy duffle bags and additional support for children in the foster care system and offer a measure of dignity to those in need.

The first visitor was Deb Short, founder and manager of the Barbara K. Brooks Transition House in Georgetown. Short explained the house provides a safe, sober and structured living environment for women who have recently completed drug or alcohol rehabilitation. DBM provides duffle bags and toiletry items to house residents, who sometimes arrive with nothing but the clothes they are wearing.

The second guest was Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, who had recently learned about DBM in connection with House Bill 419, which would require the state to provide new luggage for children in foster care to use when transporting their personal belongings. He reassured DBM board members and volunteers that their work will still be needed, regardless of the outcome of that bill.
