Farmers market to feature History Book Festival tie-in
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 28, at George H.P. Smith Park. If it rains, the market moves to the Lewes Elementary School parking lot at 820 Savannah Road.
This Saturday, the market will host a special History Book Festival event at 10 a.m. in the demo tent, when Michelle King, author of “Chop Fry Watch Learn: Fu Pei-mei and the Making of Modern Chinese Food,” will team up with Bodhi Kitchen to demonstrate how home cooks can integrate the fresh Asian ingredients available through local farms into their everyday meals. The market demonstration will feature Lion Gardner, co-founder of Second Block Hospitality, and Bodhi Kitchen Executive Chef Beau Fazio preparing dumplings with Enoch Farms pork and veggies found at the market. This event is presented in partnership with the History Book Festival, and patrons will have the chance to pick up a signed copy of the featured book.
Thirty-three farmers/producers will bring apples and apple cider, varieties of winter squash, beans, potatoes, broccoli, carrots, pumpkins, beets, radishes, eggplant, fresh ginger, garlic, spring onions, plums, pears, kale, stir-fry mix, cucumbers, peppers, paw paws, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crab meat, crab soup, seasonal soups, honey, jams, mushrooms, chicken, beef, pork, turkey, duck, lamb, fresh-laid eggs, locally roasted coffee and coffee drinks, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, cakes, cookies, pies, apple cider donuts, and pastries – including vegan and gluten-free selections – made with fruit from market vendors, along with herb, veggie and flower plants, fresh-cut herbs, beautiful cut-flower bouquets and much more.
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is producer-only, so customers are able to buy directly from the farmers who grew the produce.
Patrons should note that dogs and other pets (except for service animals) are no longer permitted inside the market area, in order to ensure the safety of customers, vendors and volunteers. Customers may still walk their dogs around the other paths and parts of George H.P. Smith Park.
This is the final Saturday in George H.P. Smith Park for the 2024 season. The HLFM Fall Market will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturdays, Oct. 5 through Nov. 23, at the Lewes Elementary School parking lot. The fall market highlights the season with Apple Celebration Day, Jazz Fest, Beebe Healthcare Day, a spooky Halloween Market, Customer Appreciation Day, special food drives and more.
The market processes payments from Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, and Women, Infants and Children Program benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Customers may go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.
The HLFM continues its food pantry purchase program. Market customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk and other food from market vendors to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to local food pantries.
Go to historiclewesfarmersmarket.org to see parking and vendor information, including whether they take preorders, along with maps. Customers will pick up preorders at the vendor tent in the market. The HLFM weekly newsletter lists demos and more; email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org or call 302-644-1436 to be added to the list.
Parking is limited, so customers should walk or bike to the venue if they are able. HLFM organizers ask customers to drive and park carefully, watching for children, walkers and bikers.
The HLFM thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2024 HLFM Market Champion, for its continued support.
