November 4, 2024

Fellowship-trained and board-certified colorectal surgeon Michele Thomas, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a long-standing member of the medical staff at Beebe Healthcare and is now an employed physician at Beebe Medical Group.

Previously, she worked at Delmarva Surgery Associates in Lewes, which was her primary private practice. She will now see patients at Beebe Colorectal Surgery, a new practice at 33663 Bayview Medical Drive in Lewes. The practice number is 302-645-9325.

Thomas specializes in medical and surgical management of anorectal disorders such as hemorrhoids, fissures, abscesses and fistulas, as well as cancerous and precancerous lesions. She also performs colonoscopies, and advocates for screening examinations to prevent and detect colon cancer. Thomas cares for patients ages 18 and over.

“Having lived and practiced colorectal surgery in Sussex County for more than 27 years, I already considered myself a part of the Beebe Healthcare community,” said Thomas. “Since the population of Sussex County is continuing to increase, I value Beebe’s commitment to keep pace and anticipate the needs of those who live and visit here. I appreciate that Beebe continues to grow and expand services to provide quality healthcare for the community. I look forward to continuing to serve patients of this community by providing comprehensive colorectal care.”

Thomas is a board-certified fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. She completed her undergraduate degree at Johns Hopkins University and earned her medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. Thomas completed her general surgery residency at St. Mary’s Hospital and Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut. She was appointed chief resident and was the first woman to complete the general surgery program.

Thomas also completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Gastrointestinal Surgery Pathobiology Research Unit at Yale University School of Medicine. Her training concluded with a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Lehigh Valley Hospital, an affiliate of Pennsylvania State University, located in Allentown, Pa. Thomas is a member of the Sussex County Medical Society and the Medical Society of Delaware.
Outside of work, Thomas enjoys spending time with her family, friends and pups. She is married to William Thomas Jr., MD, a neurologist who also practices at Beebe Medical Group. They are parents to three children – William, Grant and Jacqueline.
