Herbert W. Sheetz Jr., enjoyed volunteering, fishing

Herbert “Herb” W. Sheetz Jr., 80, of Ocean View, formerly of Bechtelsville, Pa., went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loving family.  

Herb was born Sept. 6, 1944, at Reading Hospital in Reading, Pa., son of the late Herbert W. Sheetz and the late Verna (Angstadt) Sheetz. Herb lived in Fleetwood, Pa., and graduated from Fleetwood High School in 1962 and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, Pa., in 1964, where he studied woodworking and cabinetry. He also proudly served his country in the Pennsylvania National Guard.   

He owned and operated a successful cabinet business for 34 years, Hill Top Cabinet Works in Bechtelsville, Pa. Herb was a life member of the Bechtelsville Fire Company in Bechtelsville, a member of Woodmen of the World Fraternal Society, Boyertown Alumni Band, Dewey Beach Lions Club, and was active in the ramp building projects of Milford Housing Authority. He was a member of the Ocean View Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an elder, a member of the cemetery board, and the building's chairperson. He was also instrumental in the building of the Sharing Pantry at the Ocean View Presbyterian Church. He truly loved deep-sea fishing on his boat, Thumbs Up.  

In 1967, he married Kathryn Nuss and had two children,  David W. Sheetz of Lewes, and Lori A. Jones and her husband John of Laurel. Herb is also survived by six grandchildren, Lucy A. Sheetz, Olivia K. Sheetz, Marshall W. Sheetz, Samuel R. Jones, Jack M. Jones and Caroline R. Marr.    

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 16, at Ocean View Presbyterian Church, 67 Central Ave., Ocean View, where friends and family may gather after 1 p.m. Interment will be held in the adjoining church cemetery.  

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Herb’s name to Sharing Pantry at Ocean View Presbyterian Church, 67 Central Ave., Ocean View, DE 19970.
