The Zen Master of Cape girls' lacrosse, head coach P.J. Kesmodel, would not step into the arena of a mandatory celebration May 29 because, as a person of principle, he just couldn't agree with the district board policy from which they refused to waver. Evidently the board must have agreed with the Zen Master because none of them showed up either.
But the players were there and smiling, all getting introduced as the 43rd Cape team to win a state championship and the first time in Cape school history that the Cape girls have won three state championships in the same school year, those being field hockey, spring track and lacrosse.
The girls' teams of Cape have won 11 state championships since 2002.
The varsity lacrosse team completed the season with an incredible 18-0 record against the toughest out-of-state schedule the Vikings have ever played and closed it all out with their fourth consecutive state championship. The junior varsity team under coach Jessica Reardon also completed the season with a 12-0 record.
The state championship lacrosse banquet, which is not mandatory but requires an invitation, will be held Monday, June 18, at the Lewes Yacht Club.
