Sussex Academy teacher wins Hertrich Cash for Class

December 26, 2024

Sussex Academy kindergarten teacher Laurie Smailer was recognized Dec. 6 for being named a Hertrich Family of Automobile Dealerships Cash for Class winner.

Hertrich representatives stopped by Sussex Academy’s elementary campus just before the school winter concert to surprise Smailer with a check for $940.

Smailer had applied for the funding to purchase Kinnebar Foot Swings for students. These under-desk foot swings assist students in self-regulating by promoting foot-swinging, helping them manage challenges such as sitting for extended periods of time.

Smailer said she was incredibly grateful to Hertrich for the generous donation and for its continuous support of community educators.

“These funds will be used to improve my kindergarten classroom, providing students who benefit from sensory input with a safe, structured way to access the sensory support they need,” she said. “This will help students stay focused and engaged in learning by offering them an outlet to self-regulate, leading to better attention and participation in classroom activities.”

Dean of Elementary Connie Hendrick said Hertrich’s support made it possible for Smailer to purchase foot swings for the classroom.

"We are sincerely grateful for Hertrich's generous Cash for Class donation,” Hendricks said. “These valuable tools will help students self-regulate and create a more conducive learning environment."
