Barbara Ann Dorman, veteran, devout Christian
Barbara Ann Dorman, 92, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at her residence Sunday, Dec. 15, 2024. Barbara was born in Lewes Nov. 5, 1932, daughter of the late William Carey Dorman and Alice Lina (Beauchamp) Dorman. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Dorman.
Barbara graduated from Lewes Special School in 1950, as a member of the National Honor Society. Following graduation, Barbara attended Goldey-Beacom College and then the Women's Army Corps Business School and joined the Women's Army Corps and served, with honor, at Fort Lee in Virginia and Fort Knox in Kentucky. She completed her enlistment as a corporal in September 1953. Barbara then joined the U.S. Army and Air Force Civil Service, serving with distinction at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico, Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland, and Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where she retired in 1988.
As many know, Barbara was very religious and a devoted member of Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway for well over 35 years. She was a longtime elder of the church, on the worship committee, in charge of the prayer chain regularly, and also sat on session many different times during her attendance.
Above all, she loved being spiritually and heavily involved with the music program at the church. Barbara was in the choir and loved to frequently sing solos, especially at Christmas and Easter. People will always remember her warm smile as her church family was very important to her. Extensive reading and writing was also a great passion of hers, as she had even started on some interesting, authored pieces that were always works in progress. Barbara truly was still sharp, well-informed, and up on current events right up until the very end; she just grew weary and was ready for her reward in heaven. Barbara will definitely be missed and thought of often.
Barbara is survived by her sister, Mary Lou Dickson; niece, Joanna Smith (John); two nephews, Charles Riley (Patricia) and Mark Riley (Alicia); her longtime special friend, Woodrow Cantrell; great-nieces, Melissa L. Levy (Robert), Heather L. Smeltzer (Kevin) and Bethany Riley; great-nephews, Chase Riley and Luke Riley; and great-great-nieces, Leota Fullano and Hannah Mickey.
Funeral services will be held at noon, Monday Dec. 23, at Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway, 19075 Coastal Hwy., Rehoboth Beach, where a viewing will begin at 11 a.m. Interment will follow the services at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway.
