The Cape girls’ basketball team used a running clock in the fourth quarter to shorten its game with Dover, as the Vikings secured a 68-32 win Dec. 17 at home.
Cape started off hot, scoring 34 in the first half to Dover’s 20. The Vikings continued to dominate the second half, adding 34 more to the Senators’ 12 to garner to the 36-point win.
Amelia Fruchtman continued her dominance of the Henlopen North, as her 21 points gives her 104 points in the first five games. She also grabbed five rebounds and dished off three assists.
Senior Havyn Greene, battling injury since Dec. 7, had a comeback game, scoring 14 points to go along with rebounds and three blocks in just 26 minutes of playing time.
“It was definitely my comeback game,” said Greene. “It feels great. The energy was really high, and my teammates are really supportive of me. I was having some trouble with my injury during practice and didn’t know how it was going to work out, but I had to push through it. It is my senior year, so I just gave it my all. And we had something to prove tonight against Dover.”
Senior Faith Re hit for 19 points, moving her to 72 on the season. She also grabbed three rebounds, dished off six assists and made four steals.
Freshman Mikaela Gordon continued to play like a veteran, grabbing six rebounds underneath. She scored four points, dished off three assists, made a steal and blocked a shot attempt.
“This team is really powerful, so I didn’t know I would be playing so much,” said Gordon. “But when Havyn got hurt, I wanted to help out as much as I can and do anything I could to help the team.”
Senior Hayden Hudson continued to be the glue of the defense, snagging five rebounds to break the school’s rebounding record set by Morgan Mahoney with 481. Hudson now has 49 for the season and 484 for her career. She added three assists, six points and a blocked shot.
“It’s really cool to have the record,” said Hudson. “But I’m not really focused on it. I’m just trying to help the team win.”
“Our team is steadily improving in the defensive end,” said Cape head coach Pat Woods. “We are rebounding better, and we are moving the ball very well. We are shooting a high percentage, and we are working hard and having fun. It’s great to be a part of it.”
