Delaware Electric Co-op Beat the Peak saves $1.7M in 2024
Delaware Electric Cooperative announced its Beat the Peak program saved members more than $1.7 million in 2024.
The member-owned electric utility serves more than 300,000 residents in Sussex and Kent counties.
The voluntary program encourages members to reduce energy consumption during peak demand times, helping to keep electricity rates affordable. Throughout the hot summer months, DEC provides alerts to its members when energy costs are at their highest, asking them to conserve power during those times. This partnership has resulted in significant savings – over $42 million total – since the program's start in 2008.
“We’re proud of the continued success of the Beat the Peak program, which has played a crucial role in keeping our electric rates among the lowest in the region,” said Dwayne Street, DEC chief operating officer. “We’re grateful for the partnership we have with our membership. The success of Beat the Peak would not be possible without the ongoing participation of our members that reduce their energy use during peak times.”
Members receive Beat the Peak alerts via the mobile app, email or automated phone calls. Alerts are also posted on the co-op’s social media pages.
DEC also offers incentives such as billing credits for members who conserve energy during peak periods by actions like delaying the charging of electric vehicles or allowing the co-op to make automatic adjustments to smart thermostats.
