As the sun set and a freezing wind blew Jan. 1, Rabbi Sholom Vogel and his wife, Chanale, put the finishing touches together to publicly celebrate Hanukkah for the first time at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand. This festival of lights culminated with the lighting of the eighth candle by Rabbi Vogel and Chaim Farjon from Chabad of Southern Delaware.
“We have visited over 300 homes during Hanukkah, giving menorahs, providing candles, and generally bringing the light of Hanukkah into everyone’s homes,” said Vogel, Chabad of Southern Delaware director.
The event featured good wishes and support from Gov.-elect Matt Meyer, who sent a video message, as well as Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, and Rep. Claire Snyder-Hall, D-Rehoboth Beach, who were both present.
“For the first time, Jews gathered together in a public space here in Rehoboth Beach to celebrate our holiday proudly and openly,” Vogel said. “It meant a lot to the crowd that they can get together with fellow Jews and celebrate like this.”
