Litter continues to plague Sussex County

January 14, 2025

Thank you, Jerry LaForgia, for your letter in the Jan. 7 edition of the Cape Gazette. I have been battling the litter issue in Sussex County since July 2013.

I spoke and met with the governor's office, local legislators, DelDOT, along with writing many op-eds, emails and letters with little or no progress to help reduce our litter problem. We even went to Leg Hall in Dover, and picked up trash ourselves on the Route 1 medians.

I have heard all the excuses and all the reasons for why nothing can be done. I do see trash being picked up by DelDOT in both New Castle and Kent counties. I have offered to go to our schools and help educate our youth about the effects of litter on our environment. I have heard nothing back from anyone. I really do not get it. I think we have a will issue, not a skill issue.

In my opinion, I do not think trash and litter is an important issue for our Delaware leaders, especially in Sussex County. We are a beautiful vacation state, and more and more people are moving here. I have to believe the majority of our residents care, but maybe I am wrong.

I have reached out to our new administration and I will remain hopeful that something will be done. The slogan “Keep DE Litter Free” is only a slogan without action, and it really does not mean much without action.  Additionally, the fine amounts for littering are low and can barely be seen on the posted signs. Delaware can do a lot better, starting with action from our elected officials. Other states can keep their roads clean, so why can't Delaware?
