Program to highlight Tuskegee Airmen’s stories Feb. 8

January 22, 2025

The Milford Museum will continue its American History Series at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 8, at Milford Public Library, 11 S.E. Front St., Milford. Guest speaker Andre Swygert will present a program about the Tuskegee Airmen, known for their achievements defending the nation during World War II.

The individuals who contributed so much to the record of success of the Tuskegee Airmen in defending the nation are much less known. This program will present their history through stories of the pioneering black aviators, determined politicians, far-sighted educators, professional military personnel and others involved in the effort to show that African Americans could fly and fight as well as anyone. The stories of selected Tuskegee Airmen will also be presented to recognize individuals particularly associated with the unit’s success during the war and afterward, and who individually and collectively helped to effect changes in the military and civilian society that reached far beyond their wartime service.

A Wilmington resident and retired business development professional, Swygert enjoyed a successful career principally in the aerospace and defense sectors. An author of non-fiction material on technology, events and people in the industry, he contributed to works in Air & Space Smithsonian magazine and other outlets. He is a longtime member and historian in the John H. Porter – First State Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen Inc., based in Dover.

Sponsored by the Milford Museum, these monthly programs focus on a variety of topics concerning local, state and national history.
