Delmarva Christian dominates Salisbury School 72-33 on Senior Night
Paying homage to seniors, the Delmarva Christian boys’ basketball team jumped on Salisbury School right out of the gate Feb. 6, to coast to a 72-33 win and seal the season sweep.
Freshman Darrius Liles scored 15 points in the opening frame, and the Royals led 27-7 after the first quarter.
“That's part of our testimony to our players; even though it was Senior Night, we went where the mismatch was,” said coach Marc Hannah. “[Liles] is a 6-3 freshman, so he had the mismatch.”
Delmarva Christian’s three seniors – Christian Worley, Kasey Bell and Malachi Light – started the contest alongside Liles and the freshman’s junior brother DJ. All three seniors added a pair during the offensive outburst in the first.
Leading 51-20 to start the third, the Royals ran the clock the entire second half as the boys in purple rode off with a win over the team that swept them last year.
“Any conference game that we win is always a good feeling, that’s for sure,” Bell said.
Bell did a little bit of everything in his team’s win, scoring six points, five assists, two steals, a rebound and a blocked shot. While he normally leads the team in helpers, it was Worley who played the role of playmaker, leading his team with seven assists.
“It was fun, and I really enjoyed the whole game and the whole atmosphere,” Worley said. “I never was a real basketball guy, but I felt like I got into the love of the sport, and wanted to work to get better and better at the sport.”
“He always gives you all he's got, and he's jumped by leaps and bounds,” Hannah said of Worley. “The only reason he doesn't play as much here is because our team has gotten so much better – it's not that he's not good enough – he gives you all he got.”
While the younger Liles led the team with 23 points, he tied Light for the team lead in rebounds with seven. Light stayed busy across the court adding six points, two steals, an assist and a block.
All three seniors said their favorite memory was cutting down the nets for the 2022-23 ESIAC Championship.
