Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball falls to Cavs
Fighting off the flu and with less than 24 hours’ rest from a tough game with Worcester Prep, the Delmarva Christian girls’ basketball squad took on the bigger and more physical 11-4 Cavaliers of Middletown, falling 50-29 to move to 13-4 on the season.
The Royals took nearly six minutes to get on the scoreboard and finished the first quarter in a nine-point deficient at 14-5. They went into the halftime break down 21-14.
Freshman Avery McCoy led the Royals with nine points and two steals. Senior Bella Marinelli tallied eight. Layni Dukes put up five points and six rebounds, and Eve Bohinski grabbed eight boards, three steals and three blocks.
“We’ve been going through some sickness,” said Dukes. “We aren’t at full strength, and we struggled to come out hot today. Our defense struggled a little, and we couldn’t convert our shots. Middletown was big and controlled the game in the paint. Two days back-to-back is tough, but it’s tougher when the team is fighting off sickness and a very good Middletown team.”
“We didn’t come out with energy today, and our shots weren’t falling,” said Bohinski. “I think this will make us want to work harder. We have some tough games coming up.”
“They had good size,” said Royals head coach Frank Roach. “I knew we were going to have some fatigue playing yesterday and some girls having a little sickness. I’m proud of them. They fought hard even if they weren’t feeling good.”
