A 13-11 first-quarter lead wasn’t enough for the Cape girls’ basketball team to claim the season series against Smyrna, as the Vikings ultimately fell 65-52 and the Eagles took the deciding third game Feb. 14
By halftime, the 13-win Smyrna team was on its way to its 14th win with a 30-26 lead. They expanded it to 44-37 by the start of the final quarter. The Eagles made nine three-pointers to build their advantage and were led by Amiyah Ellerbe. The junior sunk four from downtown and finished with a game-high 33 points.
The Vikings were led by junior Amalia Fruchtman’s 24 points, while senior Havyn Greene netted 15. Senior Hayden Hudson grabbed 10 boards, while Fruchtman’s eight were second and Greene tied with fellow senior Faith Re with six rebounds. Hudson led the team with four assists, but Greene and Re finished just behind her with three each.
Defensively, Fruchtman led the way with three blocked shots. Hudson, Re and Yngve each collected two steals.
Cape (11-7) wraps up the regular season with a Senior Night game against Wicomico High School at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18, and a re-match against Polytech at 6:15 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 20. Both games are home. Weather will determine if the second game is played as scheduled.
