Athletes of the Week March 14

March 14, 2025

Geordan Downing

This quiet sophomore announced his presence with authority in the No. 14 Cape boys’ basketball second-round upset of No. 3 Seaford Feb. 27. His steal and dunk was so impressive that the Blue Jays faithful and players gave props to the young man. Geordan led his team by scoring 17 of his 19 points in the second half, including 12 in the third quarter alone. He was also a defensive standout in the Wilmington Friends first-round battle and followed that up with stifling coverage in the Seaford contest. Playing since he was 3 years old, Geordan has played on a couple YMCA teams, the Running Rebels, DE Phenoms and DCH. In addition to his outstanding athleticism and defense, Geordan is an exceptional shooter. That may be his greatest attribute and is something he has earned. He is always refining his shot and giving maximum effort on defense. He likes scoring more than playing defense.

Amalia Fruchtman

Amalia wrapped up her junior year of basketball by helping lead Cape to the second round of the DIAA tournament. She led the Vikings in points (360) and free throws (63) while finishing third in rebounds (157), assists (58), steals (38) and blocked shots (32). In the first-round game against Conrad Feb. 24, Amalia made 13 shots on her way to 32 points, nine rebounds, four assists, four blocks, two steals and finished 5-for-5 at the charity stripe. Amalia was unfortunately a victim of a flagrant foul in the Vikings’ second-round game against Sanford School and was limited to just six points in the 57-54 loss. She will head into next season with 966 points, needing only 34 to join the 1,000-point club. As serious as she is in the heat of action, Amalia is just as whimsical when she is with her teammates and is oftentimes dancing or singing lyrics to the warm-up mix.

Dame Robinson

The lone senior on the first Cape boys’ basketball team to reach the quarterfinals since 2014, Dame led an impressive group of underclassmen through the ups and downs of the 2024-25 season. He opened the year with 24 points against Lake Forest before helping to upend his former school, Sussex Central, in the second game. Alternating runs of wins with a few back-to-back losses sprinkled in, Dame made sure his squad was peaking at the right time. Cape ended the year by avenging a loss to Milford and blowing out Polytech before starting the postseason run. Dame was a steady presence throughout and reminded the underclassmen not to get too high or too low, leading to the Vikings playing their best basketball at the end of the year. Dame scored 13 in the first-round game against Wilmington Friends and followed that up with seven points when it mattered most against Seaford.

Jameson Tingle

One of the key members on the Cape boys’ basketball team that reached the quarterfinals, Jameson brought down the house in the first-round game against Wilmington Friends Feb. 25, with a dunk in front of the student section that set the tone for the 56-52 win. The sophomore who led the team with 18 points in the victory said it was a dream come true to pull off such a slam in such a setting. A versatile wing who is comfortable down low, on the perimeter or with the ball in his hand, Jameson provides a confident presence on the court. He is also the starting quarterback on the football team, and believes that handling those duties in the fall has allowed him to value possessions more during the basketball season. He has been playing the game for as long as he can remember and said his favorite player in the league today is Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards.
