The Cape girls’ soccer team traveled to Delmarva Christian March 14, for a preseason scrimmage.
The Vikings got off to a powerful start and finished the afternoon with eight goals while holding the Royals scoreless.
“I think we played well today,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “We were able to work on a new tactical formation. We are looking forward to our final preseason test against Delmar Wednesday, March 19.”
“The preseason is all about giving players the opportunity to prove themselves,” said Cape assistant coach Tyler Nichols. “We had some good individual performances in the scrimmage, but the girls set lofty goals, and to achieve those, we’ve got to continue to be self-critical, even in wins.”
Royals head coach Curtis Jones is looking to play tough with non-conference teams this season.
“A great element to getting to scrimmage against a competitive team like Cape really helps to highlight our strengths and weaknesses,” Jones said. “We were missing a few key players for the scrimmage, but had the chance to give our defense and new players some game-like experience. Now, we get to take that info and make some adjustments before the season gets underway. I'm excited to see what sophomore Maddie Taylor and junior Eva Elliott can do at the top of the line, and seniors Lucy Magee and Avery Palmer leading the defense.”
Delmarva Christian has a tough schedule this year with more away games than home.
“We have a great group of young ladies,” Jones said. “I'm excited to see what we can accomplish against tough teams like Saint Mark’s, Red Lion and Wilmington Christian.”
The Royals open the season Tuesday, March 25, at Lake Forest. Cape opens the season March 25 at Brandywine.
