The Delmarva Christian boys’ volleyball team hosted a six-team play day March 15, allowing each team to play four times in 45-minute games to hone skills for the upcoming season.
Other teams competing were Cape Henlopen, Caesar Rodney, Conrad, Newark Charter and Salesianum.
“Today was a great day getting to learn how the boys play in game situations,” said Royals coach Jim Berger. “We have some talent, but we need to work on being consistent. We have already made great progress in the first two weeks of practice, and I am excited to see the growth continue over the season.”
The Royals open at home against Cape Wednesday, March 26. The two teams met in the opening game of the Saturday scrimmage.
Cape coach Tyler Coupe thought the play day was very important for the team.
“We talked this week about the need to see other teams to see how we respond,” he said. “We’ve had a great two weeks of competitive and fun practices, but going to battle against each other doesn’t always give insight into how we’ll respond to adversity against an actual opponent. We ran four different lineups in four of our matches to see what combo may work best. I think we as coaches have an idea, but still aren’t sold fully yet on a final version.”
Coupe was quick to give senior Kieran Morrissey kudos for the scrimmage play day.
“I thought Kieran did a great job today as a leader,” he said. “Kieran really was a consistent factor all day. He did his best to keep teammates engaged, told them what to look out for on the other side of the net.”
