William Edward Pettyjohn, devout Christian, racing legend

William “Eddie” Edward Pettyjohn passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones Saturday, March 15, 2025. He was born Sept. 22, 1945, in Milton, to William and Hilda (Joseph) Pettyjohn. 

He was fully devoted to his family. Eddie was the beloved husband of Kelly Pettyjohn, with whom he shared over 52 years. He is survived by his daughter, Kelly Baker (John); and his sons, David Pettyjohn (Emily), Mark Pettyjohn (Nicole) and Kenny Pettyjohn (Kim). Eddie was a devoted grandfather to Travis Terry (Brittany), Rylee Jones (Joseph), Cale Pettyjohn, Paxton and Payton Pettyjohn, and Madison and Monroe Pettyjohn.

Eddie was preceded in death by his brother, Art Pettyjohn; and his sister, Jeannie Tyndall Brittingham. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Manship; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In 1974, Eddie committed his life to the Lord. He helped countless people and used every opportunity to share the word of Jesus Christ. Eddie was a true testament to God’s word.

Eddie was known for his love of cars and making them go fast. He spent most of his life working on cars for the general public, building cars and engines, and driving cars in competitions on race tracks up and down the East Coast. He not only became a local racing legend, but Eddie was always willing to help another racer at any given time. Eddie had several proud accomplishments, which included over 300 career wins and competing in Winston Cup Series events at Dover International Speedway, where he led a lap and had a top-10 finish.

Eddie will be remembered for his unwavering faith, commitment to his family, and many accomplishments. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, faith, and strength.

A Celebration of Eddie’s Life will be held with visitation from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at Crossroad Community Church, Georgetown. A service will immediately follow. There will be a private burial for immediate family.

The family requests that any donations be made in Eddie’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
