Mason Fluharty hits his mark with Blue Jays in Baltimore

Cape grad tosses first game in Mid-Atlantic region following call-up

Cape grad Mason Fluharty threw 14 pitches, eight of which were strikes, in his Baltimore debut at Oriole Park at Camden Yards April 12.

Fluharty, a relief pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, came in during the bottom of the seventh inning with one out and his team trailing 5-4. He struck out Jackson Holliday swinging and got Gunnar Henderson to fly out to end the inning. He returned in the bottom of the eighth, getting Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman to line out before being taken out of the game. The Orioles held on to take a 5-4 victory.

On April 13, the Blue Jays took a 7-6 win from Baltimore. Fluharty pitched one inning, striking out one and walking one.

In his last four games pitched, Fluharty has allowed three hits, struck out four and walked two in four innings of work. 

Fluharty played on the 2018 Cape state championship team, where he closed out the championship game with a strikeout. Also on that team were Athletics infielder Zack Gelof, Los Angeles Dodgers prospect Jake Gelof and Washington Nationals prospect Luke Johnson. 

Fluharty graduated in 2019 and attended Liberty University, where he was a standout pitcher for the Flames. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2022.
