To verify compliance with Real ID guidelines, Delaware driver’s license and ID holders are being asked to check whether they have a gold star in the top right corner of their credentials before the deadline of Wednesday, May 7. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has confirmed the deadline will not be extended.
Those with a gold star on their credential are not required to take any further action and do not need to bring any additional documentation to a DMV location to renew their driver’s license or ID.
If a gold star is not there, the credential is not Real ID federally compliant.
Beginning May 7, anyone who does not have a federally compliant credential will not be able to board a domestic flight without carrying additional identifying information. They may also be denied access to federal buildings and more.
“With the Department of Homeland Security deadline of May 7, 2025 quickly approaching, now is the time to update your driver license if you plan on flying or need to enter a federal building. We encourage Delawareans to make an informed decision on whether a Real ID is right for them and visit our website to learn more and make sure you have your required Real ID documents before visiting a DMV location,” said Delaware Department of Transportation Secretary Shanté Hastings.
Those whose credentials have a gold star in the top right corner are among the 85% of Delaware residents who hold a Real ID credential that meets all standards for federal compliance.
To upgrade a driver’s license or identification card credential, Delawareans must go to the Division of Motor Vehicles.
