Involution Yoga opens outside Lewes

Studio to offer lunch-time Ashtanga classes
July 24, 2012

Local massage therapist Kate Fitzgerald fell in love with Ashtanga yoga during a vacation four years ago. She decided to take classes to teach others about this form of yoga, and today she is a licensed Ashtanga teacher.

After teaching at Quakertown Wellness for several years, Fitzgerald decided to go out on her own. Her new studio, Involution Yoga, opened last week outside Lewes.

"I always wanted to open my own studio," Fitzgerald said. "I had another space planned, but it didn't work out. Now I think this is where I'm meant to be."

The new studio was previously part of Benjamin Moore paints at Sandbar Village. Fitzgerald painted the walls in soothing blues and greens, and built a few walls to keep the massage area separate, but overall the space was ready for her to move in.

She plans to bring in new teachers and showcase various forms of yoga. She will primarily operate the massage practice and teach Ashtanga at the studio.

Prior to opening Involution Yoga, Fitzgerald took a trip to Los Angeles to take a class for Ashtanga teachers.

"I am working to get certification to train other yoga teachers," Fitzgerald said. "That's part of the reason I wanted my own space – to do teacher trainings."

Fitzgerald said Ashtanga yoga spoke to her. She likes the daily yoga practice and continues to improve her skills.

Ashtanga yoga is a practice that individuals perform daily. The poses are the same each day and the individual focuses on his inner strength, flexibility and mindfulness. As the individual improves, the poses increase in difficulty. New poses are added when the individual reaches a certain ability, said Fitzgerald.

"I started with yoga because I wanted to improve my strength for massage," Fitzgerald said. "I was on vacation when I first tried Ashtanga and it just clicked for me."

Ashtanga takes dedication, so Fitzgerald said it isn't for everyone. That's why she plans to expand to other forms of yoga that don't require daily practice.

A victim of multiple car accidents, Fitzgerald said, "Ashtanga has healed my body like I never expected."

Parts of her that were regularly sore and aching have been relieved through her daily yoga routine, she said. As a massage therapist for 12 years, she needs to have strength and endurance. She said yoga has helped her improve her massage skills as well.

"Yoga changes the structure of your body and creates strength," Fitzgerald said. "Involution means to draw into yourself to find your inner strength while improving your bodily strength. That's what I hope to offer here."

Involution Yoga will offer daily classes at the Shoppes of Sandbar Village, next to Benjamin Moore paints. For more information, call 302-645-7053 or go to www.InvolutionYoga.com.
