Rehoboth Beach hosted a few special guests this weekend: a crew from the Travel Channel.
Rehoboth was selected to be part of “Boardwalk Nation” – the show’s working title – a program spotlighting America’s boardwalks, produced by San Francisco-based Indigo Films.
Travel Channel General Manager Andy Singer said, “Rehoboth Beach was selected because of its many boardwalk attractions, rich history and the millions of visitors that flock to the beach and boardwalk every summer. We had many boardwalks to choose from, and Rehoboth quickly made the cut. Rehoboth is often referred to as the “Nation’s Summer Capital,” and we knew any boardwalk with such an esteemed title is more than worthy of being featured in our series.”
Besides the Boardwalk, the Rehoboth segment will also highlight the Sandcastle Contest, Rehoboth’s popular restaurants and eateries, residents and the history of city, as presented by Mayor Sam Cooper.
Cooper said his segment took two hours to film and is done as a monologue of him describing the history of Rehoboth and what makes it special.
“It was interesting,” Cooper said.
“People are rabidly loyal when it comes to ‘their’ beach and boardwalk for summer vacation. We want to know why Rehoboth is better than the rest? What makes it special? What entices them to keep coming to Rehoboth year after year and what’s on their list of boardwalk indulgences?” Singer said.
Filming took place Aug. 2-4, and the program is slated to air in late spring or early summer 2013, Singer said. The show’s run will consist of six 30-minute episodes highlighting boardwalks all over the country, from the East Coast, West Coast and Gulf Coast.
Singer said the show will be exciting and fast-paced, presented in a high-energy and immersive style.
“We'll be mounting specialty cameras on everything from the terrifying thrill rides, to a surfer braving the waves, to the 6 a.m. beach tractor that prepares the sand for the onslaught of humanity, to a parasail 150-feet above the beach. We'll be shooting in a style that celebrates the incessantly dynamic nature of the folks and the fun on the boardwalks and interviewing the local characters,” he said.
Carol Everhart, president and CEO of the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, said the Rehoboth segment would be about 11 minutes long, and feature six local businesses, as well as Rehoboth Beach Patrol Capt. Kent Buckson. She said Dewey Beach was also included in the filming.
“It’s wonderful coverage,” Everhart said. ‘We’re just thrilled.”
Singer said, “We’re covering the best beaches and boardwalks in the country, and we can’t wait to show the world the gem that is Rehoboth Beach!”
