Finding a conveniently located barbershop offering skilled barbers and reasonable prices can sometimes be difficult. Benny Thach, owner of Five Pointe Barber Shop, thinks his new business is going to satisfy customer needs.
“I think it’s a good location. People around here need a good barber, and I’m a good barber,” Thach said.
Thach graduated in 1988 from Wheaton Professional Barber School, in Wheaton, Md. He also operates a shop in Rockville, Md.
Originally for the Washington, D.C. area, Thach recently bought a home in Sussex County and said he had been looking for a place to open a second shop.
Ryan Ament mans the shop’s second chair. His four years of experience expand the shop’s customer base. Thach says he’s an old-school barber, giving traditional haircuts.
Ament cuts old school as well as newer, cutting-edge styles – incorporating letters, numbers or sport team logos into haircuts.
Open since the end of last month, Thach said haircuts for men and boys are $10 during the grand opening. He said ongoing regular prices would be competitive with other local barbershops.
Are there any trends in barbering?
“Getting shaves is coming back in cities, and it’s slowly trickling here,” Ament said.
“They get a hot towel on their face, and they relax. They feel good after that,” Thach said.
Gone are the days of barbers stropping straight razors against a strip of leather to sharpen the blade.
“We use disposable razors. Every customer gets a new razor that’s used once, only on them,” Ament said, displaying a straight razor handle and removable blade.
Thach uses quality, name-brand hair care products in the shop, but he doesn’t sell them. He said men typically buy hair care products at big box stores selling products that cost less than those he uses and perform differently.
“They spend $4 or $5 and get gels that are sticky like glue or look like dandruff coming out after they comb,” Thach said.
Although newly opened, Thach is already looking for a barber skilled in men’s hair coloring and cutting for women and girls.
“I want this to be a family shop where women, men and children can all come together to get haircuts,” he said.
Shop hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The shop is closed Sunday and Monday. Appointments and walk-ins are welcome.
