The Dave Marshall Tennis and Fitness Center in Lewes hosted a a doubles tennis round robin tournament Aug. 19 to benefit Autism Delaware. The tennis event included a cookout by the pool and a silent auction. The center thanks Dr. David Marshall and the following donors: Bev Bellows, Hillary Blatt, Jean Bowers, Aubrey Hudson, Diane Johnson and Zeljko Jeren, Carol Kelly, Azura, Bon Wich Café, Face to Image, Fish On, Flowers by Mayumi, Hooked On Plants, Lazy Susan’s Restaurant, Old Bay Restaurant, Teller Wines and Dianne Wood.
The men’s finalists in the round robin were (l-r) Bruce Eckenrode, David Bryan, Norman Sugrue and Charlie Schreiber. The winners were Bruce Eckenrode and David Bryan.
Women’s finalists were Rozi Berberian, Sally Koon, Diane Johnson and Gail Cooper; the winners were Diane Johnson and Gail Cooper. It was an afternoon of fun tennis, a cookout and camaraderie to benefit Autism Delaware.
Autism is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as Autism Spectrum Disorders. Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. Other ASDs include Asperger’s syndrome characterized by high-functioning autism. It is estimated that the prevalence of autism today is 1 in every 88 births.
