Mary Beth Ellis first American woman at Kona Ironman Triathlon

Mary Beth Ellis, 35, who grew up in Lewes before attending Lawrenceville Academy and Northwestern University, was the top American woman in the Oct. 14 Kona Ironman competition. Ellis was leading after the swim and bike but had to sit still for four minutes in the transition area on a drafting penalty during the bike phase.
She finished fifth overall among 2,000 athletes representing 60 countries and all 50 states.
Ellis won the Rehoboth Biathlon when she was 14 years old. She was the 2011 USA Triathlon non-Olympic female Athlete of the Year. She ran cross country and was a four-time NCAA qualifier in swimming while at Northwestern.
Her parents are Stephen and Kathleen Ellis.
