Congressman John Carney packaged and delivered meals for seniors March 22 as part of the Georgetown CHEER Center’s March for Meals program. This annual campaign, sponsored nationally by the Meals on Wheels Association of America, helps generate public awareness, recruit new volunteers and increase fundraising for local Meals on Wheels chapters.
“I always enjoy visiting organizations like Meals on Wheels which are doing such great work for people in our community,” said Carney. “Meals on Wheels provides hot, nutritious food every day to hundreds of seniors who depend on it. Programs like this are vital to our communities because they help people live longer, more productive lives. I urge anyone looking for volunteer opportunities to consider Meals on Wheels and help ensure that none of our seniors go hungry.”
The CHEER Center’s Meals on Wheels program provides meals to homebound seniors for every day of the week, including weekends and holidays. The meals are delivered by CHEER volunteers and are designed to meet guidelines set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a heart-healthy diet. Through the programs, seniors also have access to CHEER outreach workers who are trained to offer referrals to services seniors may need, including nutrition screenings, home health services and transportation.
