The Overfalls Foundation inducted five new members into the Delaware Maritime Hall of Fame during the annual induction banquet at Lewes Yacht Club Saturday evening, Oct. 11.
The five were selected in honor of what they have given in terms of skill, energy, heart and time in building Delaware's maritime heritage. The mission of the Overfalls Foundation is to collect, maintain, and teach maritime history for the benefit of current and further generations.
Those inducted this year include Dave Bernheisel for his efforts to help restore the Lightship Overfalls; Joshua Fisher, an 18th century Lewes-area resident who drew the first accurate navigational chart of Delaware Bay; Roy W. Miller for his 43 years as fishery biologist, supervisor, manager and administrator for Delaware's Division of Fish and Wildlife; Judith Roales, whose research and books on Delaware's lighthouses and range lights have led to greater public awareness and momentum for preservation; and C. Harwin Smith, a senior navigator and commander for the Wilmington Power Squadron, as well as an accomplished ocean racing sailor who has inspired and taught others how to enjoy safe boating.
The names of the new inductees will be permanently engraved on a stone marker in the park alongside the Lightship Overfalls in downtown Lewes, beside the canal.
