VIDEO: Stanley Jordan works magic on guitar, piano
Stanley Jordan received no less than three standing ovations during his performance before a rapt audience at Epworth United Methodist Church on the third official night of the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival.
The innovative guitarist and pianist displayed virtuosity over both instruments in a set that included original arrangements as well as Jordan's trademark re-imaginings of classical pieces and familiar standards.
A joyous rendition of Simon and Garfunkel's "El Condor Pasa" kicked off the show bringing smiles to the crowd. Later, Jordan brought everyone to their feet after playing "Romantic Intermezzo from Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra" on guitar and piano simultaneously. The encore featured Jordan playing and singing the classic railroad anthem "The City of New Orleans" and inviting the audience to sing along.
The video screens above the stage gave concertgoers a good view of Jordan's skillful fingers working their way up and down the guitar neck in the tapping technique he developed to emulate chords produced on a piano. This unique method gives the impression of various musical parts being played by a solitary musician.
Stanley Jordan will join many other participating artists during the festival's concluding event, The Final Grand Jam at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
