Cape Henlopen State Park pier closes

October 27, 2014

Structural damage to pilings has forced the Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation to close Cape Henlopen State Park pier in its entirety. Repairs to a minimum of 24 wooden pilings must be made before the pier can be reopened, according to a structural analysis conducted by consultant Baker, Ingram and Associates. The all-wooden pier was built during World War II by the U.S. Army and has undergone repairs in the past, including demolition of a  large section at the end of the pier in 2012. Eventually, according to state officials, all of the pier's 125 pilings, along with decking, must be repaired or replaced. Officials could not say how long the repair project will take. An adjacent bait and tackle shop, parking lot, pavilion and rest rooms will remain open.
