Nage restaurant kicks off new year with charity events

February 3, 2015

It may be the off-season, but the Nage Restaurant team is busy promoting events to raise money and awareness for community causes. Nage hosted the 5th Annual Winter Cocktail Party Jan. 25, raising money for the Children's Beach House in Lewes. Employees of The Big Chill, Root Gourmet, and Nage took the plunge in the 24th Annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge Feb. 1. The team is already promoting the 2nd Annual Diaper Drive to benefit Sister Rosa Alvarez's babies and the Gardenia House. In partnership with Apple Electric, the team will be looking to increase last year's number of over 11,800 diapers donated; the goal for 2015 is 20,000 diapers.

Over 100 people attended the Nage 5th Annual Winter Cocktail Party held at the restaurant Jan. 25. Food and dessert displays by the talented Nage team of chefs wowed attendees. A gingerbread house replica of Nage Restaurant was the centerpiece for an elaborate dessert display prepared by Nage Pastry Chef Dru Tevis. The team organized fun games and a 50/50 that netted more then $500 for the charity.

Mark Harrison, Nage general manager, said, “From the efforts of our staff, to the donations by our guests, I could not be more happy with the results of the event. Having over 100 people at Nage, in January, in an enjoyable atmosphere and raising money for the Children's Beach House is great. It is an event we will continue to do for many years to come.”

This is the first year the employees took the plunge. Bar Manager Jennifer Phelps organized the team and is leading the fundraising efforts. The team gathered at Nage for a warm-up party before heading downtown to take the plunge. Phelps said, “Although I don't typically jump in the water even in July, I just have to do it for this great cause and cross it off my bucket list and have fun with the Nage team!”

The diaper drive will be held 5 from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 5. It is the brainchild of the team at Apple Electric and Nage Catering Director Kathy McDonald. The event was so successful last year, the team is looking to expand on that success.

Harrison said, “Hosting the diaper drive at Nage last year was an eye-opening experience for me personally. By partnering with Apple Electric we were able to donate over 11,000 diapers. I look forward to surpassing our goal of 20,000 diapers this year with the help of our generous guests that support us year round.”

Nage Restaurant is at 19730 Coastal Highway, Rehoboth Beach. To participate in the diaper drive, drop off packs of diapers between 5 and 8 p.m. Stay for dinner, and Nage will donate a portion of the proceeds to the Gardenia House.
