The Cape Henlopen girls' swim team won its third straight Henlopen Conference Championship with a dominating 341-point performance in front of a packed house at Lake Forest Feb. 7. Second place was taken by Sussex Tech with 185 points.
The girls' 200 medley relay team of Sarah Hyde, Molly Weeks, Sarah Rambo and Amelia Nigh-Johnson set a new record of 2:07.86, breaking the 2003 record of 2:08.51.
Weeks also broke the record in the 100 freestyle with a 1:01.18, and she won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:15.34. She also teamed with Grace Brokaw, Elena Campbell and Sarah Hyde to win the 400 freestyle relay with a 4:28.85.
"Our relay team has been swimming together for so long, and we really support each other," said record holder Molly Weeks.
Cape relay teams hold all three girls' relay records for the conference.
"The team supports each other because we swim in different heats," Weeks said. "We really push ourselves and each other."
"Everybody dropped times at the meet," said Cape coach Bill Geppert. "The kids really stepped up. A lot of swimmers swam their personal bests, and each and every swimmer contributed to the win."
Sophomore Molly Weeks was awarded the Vince Morris Outstanding Girl Performer of the Meet Award while Cape coach Bill Geppert was awarded the 2015 Boys' Coach of the Year.
The Vikings boys' squad placed second with 241 points behind champion Caesar Rodney with 323 points.
"It was Caesar Rodney's big year on the boys' side," said Geppert. "We have a young boys' team and they really shocked Caesar Rodney in the 200 medley relay."
The 200 medley relay was won by Cape Henlopen's Ricky Brokaw, Cole Conrad, Michael Schrock and Jack Weeks with a time of 2:01.51. The Riders placed second with a 2:01.58.
"We all dropped time in our splits," said junior Ricky Brokaw. "We had to, because Caesar Rodney was seeded ahead of us and we wanted to get them after losing to them in the regular season."
"I'm just thrilled to pieces to be where the boys were this season," said Geppert.
Cape junior Jack Weeks broke the meet record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:12.90.
Cape will compete in the DIAA State Championship starting Feb. 25 at the University of Delaware.
