Delmarva Christian girls' basketball coach named Coach of the Year

Sharon Stevens led lady Royals to conference championship
March 27, 2015

Delmarva Christian High School girls' basketball coach Sharon Stevens was selected as the Diamond State Conference Coach of the Year. Stevens led the Lady Royals to an Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference championship and a slot in the state championship as well.

Though winning was exhilarating, Stevens was never motivated by the hope of a championship season. Her goal was to return fun and passion to the game for the players she would coach. “This was a phenomenal group of girls,” Stevens says with a smile. She knew the team had potential and found each team member brought a great attitude that really balanced the team.

Stevens wanted the team to find their strengths and remembers the turning point during a midseason meeting. “We were doing OK, but I thought we could go deeper,” she says. During the meeting, she took time to tell the players their strengths. The effort was rewarded with a more focused and poised team that exhibited teamwork and sportsmanship.

Character was an important attribute during the past championship season, and Stevens considers winning the conference sportsmanship award as well as the championship to be an indicator of the success of the DCHS girls' basketball program. Maybe the true measure of the impact Stevens had on the Lady Royals is found in the clear message written on a card the team gave her at the end of the season. It read, “Thank you for helping us gain respect.” For more information, call 302-856-4040 or go to www.delmarvachristian.com.
