Department of Correction graduates 32 cadets

January 4, 2010

The Delaware Department of Correction graduated 32 cadets Dec. 4. The students completed correctional employee initial training and were then assigned to posts throughout the state. The graduating class was composed of 25 correctional officers, two correctional officer food-service specialists, one correctional officer maintenance specialist, two correctional officer trades instructors, one community work-program coordinator and one paralegal.

Cadets took the oath of office and received their assignments before family, friends and correction department officials.

The training staff named Brian Vanes of Swedesboro, N.J., outstanding cadet. Peers selected Mark Pariseau of Camden to be the class speaker. Graduates completed nine weeks of training, including hands-on and classroom sessions in a multitude of areas, including weapons familiarization, defensive tactics, emergency preparedness, report writing, substance-abuse awareness training, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, basic first aid and interpersonal communication.

The graduates will join the ranks of more than 1,700 employees in the correctional officer series who uphold the department’s mission of protecting the public by supervising more than 7,000 adult offenders in correctional facilities throughout the state.
