Anne Hanna and Laura Hickman exhibiting together

Reception May 9 at Gallery One in Ocean View
April 30, 2015

In celebration of Gallery One’s 10th anniversary season, there will be special shows from May through September. Each month, two or three partners will be spotlighted. Laura Hickman and Anne Hanna will be the featured artists for May. The work is being shown April 30 to May 31.

There will be a reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, May 9, at the gallery.

Anne Hanna will be showing eight new works in landscapes, animals and florals. She says she paints to reach her viewers, and when she connects with them, she feels a deep satisfaction. Conversely, she sometimes feels sad parting with a painting but reminds herself that in sharing her art with others, she brings joy. Hanna paints from photos which she views upside down due to astigmatism, an eye condition which skews her drawing.

“Rather than being the burden I expected, I find that I focus on shape, color, change, nuance and pattern that the eye actually sees, rather than the preconceived notions in the mind. It also allows me to surprise myself and I feel brings vitality to my work.”

Laura Hickman is presenting 13 new pastels with the theme Bygone Bethany. She says, “My paintings are images from Bethany’s vanishing past based on my collection of old photographs and drawings. Most of the old buildings I paint are now gone. A few have been renovated, and all are depicted in direct sunlight. Today’s larger and higher cottages are missing sunlight. I paint sunlight. I paint old Bethany.”

Gallery One is always staffed by one of the artists/owners and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The gallery is at 32 Atlantic Ave., Route 26, in Ocean View. For more information go to www.GalleryOneDE.com or call 302-537-5055.
