“Instruction for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it,” is a quote from poet Mary Oliver. It is a mantra for those who love to paint. Artists see what they notice, take what they notice into their hearts and tell about it with canvas, brush and paints. The circle is complete when the viewer attaches to the artist’s vision and creation.
Tara Grim, Pat Riordan and Cheryl Wisbrock are Gallery One’s featured artists for June. The three painters have taken the local landscape as inspiration for their show to be exhibited Monday, June 1 through Monday, June 29. There will be a meet-the-artist reception from 5 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, June 3, at Gallery One.
For Grim, the landscape is only a starting point. She says, “My ideas and inspiration come from what I see, but most of the time feelings just emerge while I paint. Instead of listening to the voices in my mind that have always helped handle the technique of painting, I am now listening to the voices in my heart. Nothing is predictable any longer. Images are developing that I never thought possible.” Her large colorful, bright and happy paintings are in acrylic and collage.
Wisbrock paints in watercolor and acrylic, both en plein aire and in her studio. She will exhibit recent works in both mediums, focusing on regional landscapes and waterscapes, including farm, coastal and marsh scenes. “We are blessed with an amazingly rich environment, offering visual beauty and stimulation in every season,” she says. “Painting outdoors is the most direct and fun way to capture this, but when that is not practical, I enjoy working in my studio from reference materials and memory.”
Riordan sees the environment of the coastal resort region as an open canvas of varied seasonal color, wildlife and lifestyles. “I love to paint what I see, and because of that my paintings go from semi-realism to the abstract, from oil to acrylic to watercolor. Subject matter changes with the seasons. Colors and light are different in the spring, summer, fall and winter. The summer season is full of faces and places. In winter I settle down surrounded by the empty beach, the quiet streets and my cats, a favorite subject."
